As the legendary Huka Lodge Big Red Dinner reaches its 20-year anniversary we could think of no better way to celebrate this occasion than with Stephen White, founder of Stonyridge Vineyard, Waiheke Island.

Join us for our 20th Big Red Dinner celebration, hosted by Stonyridge’s founder, Stephen White. Steve gained a Diploma of Horticulture, specialising in Viticulture, Lincoln College University of Canterbury after leaving secondary school.

Steve left New Zealand in 1978 to become a crew member in the Whitbread Round the World Race. This was followed by time spent captaining a 54-feet ketch around the waters of the Mediterranean. After three years spent sailing around the world, and working in vineyards in France, Italy, Greece and California, Steve returned to New Zealand to turn his dream of making really great red wine, into a reality.

Lengthy investigation and research led Steve to a sunny, north facing site on Waiheke Island, in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. At this time, establishing a vineyard here was done in a true pioneering spirit, as the potential for the area was totally unknown. Steve commenced planting in 1982, and by 1987 he made a wine, Larose, that was so extraordinary that it was considered to be the finest red wine to ever come from a New Zealand vineyard.

The rest is now history, with Stonyridge Larose, consistently bettering or equalling some of the world’s greatest red wines in international competition, and showcased in the wine lists of the best restaurants in the world. Executive Chef, Paul Froggatt, will work closely with Steve to create five exquisite dishes to complement the intense complexity of the Stonyridge wines Steve will select for this prestigious Big Red Dinner.
